Department of Energy Announces $10,5 Million to Advance Hydrogen Combustion Engines Innovation.
The DOE has granted $10.5 million for research, development, and demonstration of three projects focused on hydrogen combustion engines as part of its announcement to fund 27 projects aimed at developing clean mobility options. The Vehicle Technologies Office of DOE has announced a total of $131 million to boost the battery supply chain and supercharge electric vehicle innovation in the nation.

The following are details regarding the development of high-efficiency, low emissions, heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engines by three companies:
1. PACCAR Inc. from Mount Vernon, WA, is working on the development and demonstration of a heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine.
2. Cummins Inc. from Columbus, IN, is developing a high-efficiency, low emissions, heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine.
3. Powertrain from Plymouth, MI, is developing a high-power, ultra-low emissions, heavy-duty hydrogen engine.
These internal combustion engine projects will support the use of hydrogen in the medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) transportation sector. This also supports the use of hydrogen in MD/HD fuel cell vehicles. They have been identified as a key end-use for clean hydrogen in the national clean hydrogen strategy.
The national strategy guides the priorities of the Hydrogen Interagency Task Force. It is coordinating a whole-of-government approach to advancing clean hydrogen. Tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act promote clean hydrogen, while research, development, and demonstration aim to achieve the Hydrogen Shot goal of $1 per kg within a decade.
