Shell Reaches Agreement With Greenpeace To Place Activists On An FPSO Tanker

British oil and gas company Shell reached an agreement with environmental group Greenpeace on Tuesday after activists boarded a Shell oil production vessel last year.

Greenpeace said it had agreed to pay the Royal National Lifeboat Institution 300,000 pounds ($382,650) and temporarily avoid protests at four Shell facilities in the northern North Sea.

Shell took legal action after Greenpeace activists boarded a ship near the Canary Islands off the Atlantic coast of North Africa in January 2023 to protest oil exploration and took the ship to Norway.

The ship was heading to the Penguin oil and gas field in the North Sea, which has not yet started production.

Four Greenpeace activists boarded the ship using ropes from an inflatable raft, chasing the ship at high speed.

Protests at sea against oil, gas, or mining infrastructure have long been part of Greenpeace’s actions. ($1 = 0.7840 pounds)
