A Ship Lost Control And Collided With A Cargo Ship Off The Coast Of Istanbul

On November 21, 2024, two ships anchored off the coast of Kartal, Istanbul, collided after strong south-westerly winds caused one of the ships to spin out of control.

The 99-meter-long and 19-meter-wide dry cargo ship Marla Urca, flagged by Guinea-Bissau, began drifting due to strong winds, which later led to the collision.

The Marla Orka, which had recently completed a voyage from Egypt to the Sea of Marmara, collided with the 116-meter-long and 13-meter-wide ship DSK1, flagged by Cameroon.

The Orca dropped anchor near Kartal and headed for Kroman. At around 0500 GMT, the ship weighed anchor and collided with the DSK1, which was also anchored.

The accident caused significant damage to both ships, and the crew panicked.

A video clip shot by a crew member on board the DSK1 on a mobile phone has gone viral, showing the panicked moments when the accident occurred.

The video shows the crew members feeling uneasy when they see the boat approaching them.

After the accident, Mara Orka managed to break free and reposition herself elsewhere on the pier under her power.

As of Sunday (November 24), both vessels remained anchored and stable.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and its impact on local marine traffic.
