World’s Largest Sailing Cargo Ship In Recent History Is About To Set Sail - Merchant Navy Info

The world’s largest sailing cargo ship, Anemos, has set sail from Concarneau in southern Brittany.

The flagship vessel, developed by TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) and built by PIRIOU Shipyard, will arrive in Le Havre early next week. After completing cargo operations, Animus will depart for New York City on August 20, 2024.

The delivery of Anemos marks a major milestone in the shipping industry. The state-of-the-art vessel, which is 81 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 63 meters high, is the first of eight cargo ships scheduled to sail.

Utilizing advanced sailing technology from ocean racing and automated rigging, Anemos aims to transform the shipping industry by reducing environmental impact.

Diana Mesa, CEO of TOWT, expressed her joy, saying that after more than two years at the shipyard, they are excited to receive delivery and embark on their first commercial voyage.

Anemos is an important step in the decarbonization of global shipping. The vessel’s main propulsion will be wind power, expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100% and significantly reduce other pollutants such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides. This steering of navigation is expected to have a smaller impact on biodiversity and ocean acidification than traditional motorized ships.

Guillaume Le Grand, CEO of TOWT, stressed the importance of the launch and mentioned that during the Olympic Games, they made it their discipline to fight global warming.

Several French manufacturers participated in the construction of the vessel, including H&T (architects), Incident Sails, LORIMA, etc.

Vincent Fougeur, President of the PIRIOU Group, stressed the collaborative efforts of both parties and said that this ship represents the beginning of a wonderful story that embodies French innovation and the dedication of all participants.

TOWT is committed to green and economic innovation. By 2025, it aims to reduce 9,600 tons of CO2 emissions per year and convert 72,000 tons of cargo to low-carbon transportation.

Using sailing vessels like Anemos demonstrates the maritime industry’s ability to harness wind energy for a more sustainable future.

Anemos is more than just a ship. It symbolizes progress in shipping, combining tradition with cutting-edge technology to combat climate change and promote sustainable shipping practices.
