Basic overview

This course is designed to provide students with the competencies necessary to perform navigational watch evaluation duties for officers in charge of maritime navigational watches. Candidates who complete this course will be awarded an international certificate to help them maintain navigational watchkeeping. AMSA will provide them with the necessary learning materials to implement the Distance Learning Program (DLP). After further sea duty and examinations, you will be promoted to first officer and then captain.Training programs are offered by the Faculty of Maritime Studies. The program is delivered in collaboration with the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Tasmania, Australia. Upon successful completion of all three phases, a Certificate of Competence as a Deck Observer (Second Officer FG) will be issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum educational qualification to join merchant navy is ‘A’ and equivalent qualification (10+2 years of formal study) in the following courses: Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) – Total 45% Age limit: 16-25 years Visual acuity: No colour blindness, 6/6 visual acuity in one eye, no glasses.

Level 1

Maritime Pre-Training Program This includes four months of training provided by the Maritime College at the Coastal Academy, Pune.

Training during this period will include the following topics

English and standard maritime communication phrases. General knowledge and safety of ships Knowledge of ship technology also Monitoring compliance with legal requirements. Plan, execute, and locate paths. Electronic navigation aids. Safe Labor Practices in Merchant Marine. Seafarer Internship.

Seaboard Training Program Students complete 24 months of shipboard training.

Certificate of Competency – Deck Watcher (DWK) Students attend an Australian university for eight months at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, Australia. Course starts

Courses start in February and August each year.

Certificate Issuance

Upon completion of Phase 1, the Maritime Faculty will issue a Certificate of Completion to students who successfully complete the DECK CADET course. When completed of Phase II, CMS-AMC will issue her TAGS Completion Certificate to all students also who successfully complete her TAGS tasks. Upon completion of Phase 3 of this program, which includes all exams and required/other courses, students will be issued a Deck Watchkeeper (DWK) Certificate of Competency by their AMSA. Also Upon completion of Phase 3 of this program, students may also receive a Diploma in Applied Science if they are able to meet all of the criteria for this Diploma.
